Alex was born in El Paso, Texas, the oldest son of an Irish father and a Mexican mother. After flunking out of college twice, he finally earned a BA in English Literature from SMU.  While later working in Los Angeles as a claims adjuster, he was amused by the miraculous recoveries which followed claimants’ receipt of payment for their injuries and their stories became the basis for a screenplay from which Grattan produced his first movie.  In 1979, he wrote, directed and co-produced a movie about the Mexican-American experience titled, Only Once in a Lifetime.  The film premiered at the Kennedy Center, and was later recognized at the Deauville Film Festival.  In 1987, he moved to Ajijic, Mexico, where he founded the Ajijic Writers’ Group, and began writing novels. He is currently Editor-in-Chief for El Ojo del Lago.
